Port Wentworth Begins Full Enforcement of Downtown Semi-Truck Ban on Coastal Highway

Effective July 1, 2026, the City of Port Wentworth has begun full enforcement of its restriction on through semi-truck traffic along the downtown section of Coastal Highway (State Route 25).

The restriction prohibits through commercial truck traffic along the downtown corridor between Grange Road and Bonnie Bridge Road. Trucks making local deliveries within the area remain exempt from the restriction.

According to the City of Port Wentworth, the enforcement follows a two-month public outreach effort that included educational campaigns, new roadway signage, coordination with regional transportation partners, and a warning period throughout June. The initiative is intended to improve public safety, reduce heavy truck traffic through downtown, and support the city's long-term vision of creating a more pedestrian-friendly business district.

The enforcement became possible after the Georgia Department of Transportation approved the city's request to assume local jurisdiction over the affected section of State Route 25, allowing the city to regulate truck traffic through the downtown corridor.

Regional coordination has been an important part of the transition. The City of Port Wentworth worked with the Georgia Ports Authority, neighboring jurisdictions, and transportation partners to increase awareness of the new routing requirements and improve directional signage leading into the area.

For trucking companies, dispatchers, freight brokers, and logistics providers serving the Savannah region, the change reinforces the importance of using designated truck routes when traveling through Port Wentworth. Drivers making local deliveries may continue to access businesses within the restricted area, while through traffic should follow the posted alternate routes.

The Savannah Traffic Club encourages members and industry partners to ensure drivers and dispatch personnel are aware of the new enforcement to help avoid citations and minimize operational disruptions.
