TCI Weekly Newsletter

Transportation Clubs International

Caci Case TCI PresidentI hope everyone is ready for the wonderful holiday season this year!  This will be the last newsletter of the year as I will be enjoying Christmas with family and friends and then off to Disney World with a group including my 2 and 5 year old boys.  I am sure I will have many stories to share with you next year!

I would like to take a moment to say a few words about a wonderful man of our industry who recently passed away after a courageous battle with brain cancer.  The co-founder of USXpress, Patrick Quinn, passed away this week at the age of 65.  Mr. Quinn has always been a great supporter of both TCI and the local clubs including the Northwest Georgia Transportation Club and the Chattanooga Transportation Club.  He was also awarded TCI Person of the Year in 2009.  For those of you who knew him, you will understand the great loss his passing is to our industry.  However, I am confident his efforts in our local community, logistics community, and even in Washington, D.C., will live on through his many years of service in each.  I have had the pleasure of working under his leadership for the past 10 years and I am honored to have been directed under such a brilliant advocate of our industry.  There is no question that he will be missed and remembered.  Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers over the upcoming holiday season.  In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in the name of Patrick E. Quinn to the American Cancer Society.  The public are invited to view an online memorial tribute and share words of comfort with the family.

Supply Chain News

According to Cass Information Systems and Avondale Partners, truckload linehaul rates rose 8.5% YOY in November.  However the linehaul index dropped in October indicating that price increases leveled off for the second month.  Cass reports that truckload carriers continue to command prices that are well above those from last year.

President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper signed two agreements in an effort to make it easier to move goods across the border.  This agreement will implement joint cargo inspection and clearance of goods that arrive by land, rail and sea.  Harper states, "Moving security to the perimeter of our continent will transform our border and create jobs and growth in Canada by improving the flow of goods and people between our two countries".

VTG Rail has taken over the business activities of SC Rail Leasing America.  The transaction doubled its railcar fleet by adding over 2000 cars from SCRL.  VTG Chairman, Dr. Heiko Fischer states, "Doubling our railcar fleet in North America enables us to reinforce our position in the world's largest rail freight market.  At the same time, we will be able to enter new customer and market segments and further support our growth."
