Newsletter for Week of November 7, 2010 from TCI President, Dennis Tam

8 November 2010 Good morning everyone.  After seeing the results I think the American people have spoken to how they feel about the way things are going (or not going) in the U.S.  The media had been predicting sweeping changes, but I always remain skeptical until I see it first hand. My only hope is that the two sides come together and find a way to put people back to work, raise confidence to a higher level that will shake loose businesses to quit hoarding their cash and invest in new machinery, tool, and equipment and cut taxes.  That's my Christmas wish list.   2011 is not going to be the year first predicted.  The economy is not going to grow with any great muster.  Now they tell us!!  While the economy will continue to grow (some areas better than others) in 2011, it will be another year of hard choices, extra workloads and not much personal gain.  I'm already gearing up for less than spectacular year at my own company and have already put some more controls in place so as to not lose what gains we made in 2010.   Two happy notes are that pick-up truck sales has risen greatly in recent weeks which means some people are finally spending some money.  Also, the increased intermodal traffic from the Far East during late summer translates into retailers expecting better than normal holiday sales.    If you are planning on traveling in the next couple of months checkout these venues.  The Houston Transportation Professional's Association will be hosting their Fall Scholarship Golf Tournament on Wednesday, December 1st at Kingwood Golf Club in Kingwood, Texas.  for more information go to www.htpa.net or contact Dennis Tam at djrail296@aol.com.  The Northwest Georgia Traffic Club and the Chattanooga Transportation Club will co-host their Annual Christmas Party on Friday, December 3rd at the Chattanoogan in downtown Chattanooga.  For more information contact Diane Towery at dtowery@accessamericatransport.com.   On Thursday, December 9th the Denver Transportation Club will host their Annual Chistmas Dinner at the Rialto Cafe in Denver.  For more information contact their web site at denvertrans@msn.com or call Wendy Brice at (303) 380-2626.  The Houston Transportation Professional's Association will host their Annual Holiday Luncheon on Friday, December 10th at the Omni Hotel in the Galleria.  for more information contact Lory Tauber at loryt@tauberoil.com or go to their web site at www.htpa.net.   International Transportation Management Association will host their Annual Holiday Celebration on Friday, December 17th at the Greenspoint Club in north Houston, Texas.  For more information go to their web site at www.itmahouston.org.    Two other venues that I want to mention are the Denver Transportation Club will host Colorado's 30th Annual Transportation Symposium January 27-29, 2011.  It will be held at the Renaissance Denver Hotel.  For more information on this wonderful venue go to their web site at denvertrans@msn.com.    And for you folks in the West and Northwest there will be a WTTC West Coast Retreat April 29th thru May 1st at the Tulalip Resort Casino.  For more information contact Tina Lyons at 2river@comcast.com.    Regards, Dennis Tam President, TCI
